Blogging for Burma Day

Via Ionarts. Facebook joins in too with over 325,000 members, but as Richard Bailey writes: “Of course, joining a Facebook group is easy; doing something, sustaining a campaign and making a difference are harder tests.”

Snickers’ Super Bowl ad: homophobic or not?

I thought Snicker’s 2007 Super Bowl ad was the funniest ad of the bunch. But several gay rights organizations didn’t think so. I’m usually on par with the gay rights organizations, so what happened this time?
A press release by the Human Rights Campaign states:
“Three alternate endings to the commercial spot are posted on the Snickers [...]

Dutch burqa ban tackles issue, not root

She’s at it again. And this time it’s strategically happening just before the general elections. Rita Verdonk is the driving force behind the Dutch cabinet backing a proposal to ban the burqa from public spaces.
“The cabinet finds it undesirable that garments covering the face — including the burqa — should be worn in public in [...]

Nobody has to rock my vote

In Cook County, yesterday was the last day to register to vote, but the good news is that there is a new grace-period. So if you haven’t registered already, do it now. For people in other counties, please register while you still can as well. And although I do care for what candidate you would vote, it [...]

The dire state of human rights for noncitizens

This blog posting won’t suffice, but then again, it doesn’t have to. If the president decides I am an unlawful enemy combatant, then I am an unlawful enemy combatant; it’s that simple, United States citizen or not. And because, as a noncitizen, I would be labeled an alien unlawful enemy combatant, I would not have [...]

Immigration and communication

Ashley Imsand on Forward picks at some questions regarding immigration and communication. I posted a reply, which turned out longer than I thought. I don’t want all that typing to go unused here and it fits right in with my newly positioned content; so here follows my reply:
I am an immigrant and I support a [...]

Talking cultural advocacy with Yo-Yo Ma

This morning I met Yo-Yo Ma again and not only does he remain one of the nicest people I have ever met, he articulated some of the most interesting thoughts about culture and multiculturalism in an interview I witnessed. You can hear pieces of the interview this Saturday, August 12, from 8:00 to 12:00 noon [...]

Change the language and stories first

I don’t quite know how to counter it either, but calling it bigotry, politics or untrue doesn’t do anything to revert support for the amendment to ban same-sex marriage.
Yesterday, Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist, R-Tenn. said: “Marriage between one man and one woman does a better job protecting children better than any other institution humankind [...]

Iron Rita follow up

Ayaan Hirsi Ali in the Washington Post today:
“I have said many times that I am not proud that I lied when I sought asylum in the Netherlands,” Hirsi Ali said in her statement Tuesday. “I did it because I felt I had no choice. I was frightened that if I simply said I was fleeing [...]

Iron Rita strikes again

Unfortunately, this is not a pun on the famous Star Wars movie, but the sad truth about Dutch Minister Rita Verdonk, who has threatened to take away the Dutch citizenship of MP Ayaan Hirsi Ali. An immediate debate by parliament has been called.
My feelings toward Hirsi Ali have always been mixed. On one hand a [...]
