From Texas to Raiders of the Lost Ark
Just returned on Monday from another weekend in Texas. There were a couple of good reasons to go: a baby shower, a 10-year high school reunion and father’s day.
The men didn’t partake in the baby shower, however; instead we did our manly thing. We all went mountain biking. If my life revolved more around biking I would move to Austin in a second.
I had been looking forward to my wife’s high school reunion as well. Relying on this shining example as a source, I expected a full-blown American cultural experience. It turned out to be a little different (no interpretive dancing for example), but interesting nonetheless.
Father’s Day was great fun. We gave my father-in-law a ticket to Mariachi Vargas, who is (are?) coming to Chicago in September. I’ve already started working on the concert and have gotten some great responses so far. This year’s concert falls smack in the middle of Hispanic Heritage Month and if last year’s concert is anything to go by…
Lastly, the past couple of weeks have been cable-less, due to the move. As a result, I have been going through my DVD collection. I watched Baz Luhrman’s Romeo and Juliet just before Maestro Chung conducted Prokofiev’s musical version, which was quite an interesting comparison. And last week I borrowed the Indiana Jones box set from work. In anticipation of Indiana Jones 4 and as a tribute to Raiders of the Lost Ark, here’s what happens if Mahler and Strauss would have been involved.
