A week in Texas

I spent all of last week in Texas, mostly in Austin. I didn’t go to South by Southwest and a planned trip to Antone’s didn’t happen either. So much for going to the live music capitol capital (yikes!) of the world.

I spent the week mostly relaxing. A bit of running, a bit of biking and visiting Austin’s amazing bike shops, and a lot of fine time with family. A day trip brought me to Fredericksburg, a beautiful little German settler town southwest of Austin with lots of antique shops and German sausages. I don’t know what was more beautiful however, the town itself or the road there via farm and ranch roads near Dripping Springs.

On Friday, I performed my duty as a tourist and went to the Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum. It’s a pretty good museum and I learned that I like Stephen F. Austin and Samuel Houston, but I dislike Mirabeau B. Lamar.

On Saturday, I went to a gorgeous wedding of my wife’s elementary school friend in San Antonio. A great city, despite a cab driver pretending not to know where to go (I did, thank you Google Maps!). Unfortunately, we didn’t have time to roam the streets or the river walk, as we had to be back to Austin on Sunday to fly back to Chicago. Austin’s Bergstrom International Airport is still my favorite airport, by the way.

I love going to Texas and it’s growing on me every time I visit, but it’s even better to be home in Chicago. Especially after this news.
