A debut of some sort
Last night I made a debut of some sort. I was a guest lecturer at my former teacher’s class at Columbia College. I met Dominic Calabrese through an independent project in college and he later invited me to do an internship at his organization, the Chicago Lighthouse. He teaches a non-profit public relations class at Columbia College.
Since I don’t consider myself an expert with only a year and a half of experience—even though I am amazed at how much I have learned in that time—I wanted to focus the lecture on what to expect right out of college.
I talked about the great internship experience at the Chicago Lighthouse, where I was not just the guy that gets everyone coffee but got assigned actual work. I went on to talk about how I searched for jobs and how much volunteering helped me extend my network. And I touched my brief stint at Carol Fox & Associates before I moved on to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, explaining my day-to-day tasks and some of the most memorable projects.
Some students appeared to be interested, others not so much. I keep telling myself that was because it was a Thursday night class, probably their last class of the week. Overall, I don’t think I did a bad job in my guest lecture debut. I am curious to see if any of the students will e-mail me.
I think I would love to take on teaching some classes down the road. Just like this brilliant man across the pond.
