Stashed between the old joist walls

Ten points for whoever gets the title of this post. Today, the World Press Photo, an organization based in the Netherlands and the most prestigious photo competition in the world, announced the winner of its 2007 World Press Photo of the Year. Browse through the gallery and you will come across some of the most amazing photos you will ever see.

The other day, when I was at a photo shoot for an article in the Chicago Tribune about the retiring CSO Concertmaster Samuel Magad, I ended up in conversation with the photographer, Alex Garcia. He is a great guy who regularly shoots CSO concerts for the Tribune and also did a photo reportage about Daniel Barenboim’s last concerts at the CSO. He mentioned that he had won a World Press Photo first prize in 2002. You can see his work on his Web site.

I think it’s amazing how, sometimes, just one image can tell such a powerful story.

It might come as no surprise, then, that of my very favorite artists, Osvaldo Golijov and Michael Stipe, look so similar in the two photos below. Read more on Golijov in this week’s Chicago Jewish News.
