CSO back on the radio, Beyond the Score on the Internet

Bela BartokToday has been a tremendously exciting day so far. This afternoon I saw a run-through of the upcoming Beyond the Score on The Miraculous Mandarin. As you may know by now, I am probably the greatest fan of the Beyond the Score series and just as the two previous concerts I witnessed (Strauss’ Ein Heldenleben and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 4), I was once again blown away with fluent dialogue and spectacular imagery from the 1910s and 1920s.

Yesterday I went with the series Creative Director Gerard McBurney, who joined the CSO team this year, to WFMT for an interview. If anyone can tell a fascinating story, it is Gerard. In typical British fashion, his language is so colorful and imaginative; and he truly is one of the most knowledgeable people I have ever met.

It comes as no surprise that I am looking forward to Sunday. But for those of you who cannot travel to Chicago or who cannot make it to Orchestra Hall for another reason: do not despair. In a major announcement today, the CSO shared the news that new radio and recording initiatives will be launched. This includes a nationally syndicated radio broadcast series on WFMT and the creation of CSO Resound, an in-house label. The CSO’s performance of Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 with Bernard Haitink this season will be the first release early next year, available as download and CD.

But the most exciting aspect of these new initiatives might be the free video downloads of this coming Sunday’s Beyond the Score concert. The production of The Miraculous Mandarin—which will also go to New York’s Carnegie Hall in December—will be made available on the CSO’s Web site in January.

Come that time, I will definitely post a link. Now you see why today has been such a tremendously exciting day.
