What if turns reality for Obama
I have heard many times that if Oprah Winfrey would endorse a presidential candidate, it would make all the difference. It is a dreamy what if scenario and maybe the ultimate endorsement. To my knowledge, Oprah has never endorsed a particular candidate. Until today. In a move that might well prove to be a very significant point in the upcoming 2008 presidential election, Oprah endorsed Barack Obama for president on Larry King Live this Monday night.
I don’t know if she intended a full fledged endorsement, but the words came out quite strong. I wonder if she will comment on it further in the coming days. And I wonder if the Obama camp will have anything to say, beside the obvious “we appreciate it.” I am looking forward to see this story develop, as I am sure it will. This could be colossal.
The transcript according to the Chicago Tribune:
“Any comment on this movement to make you president?’’ King asks near the end of his show, Larry King Live, which CNN will show tonight.
“Is there a movement?’’ Winfrey asks.
“This guy’s got a movement,’’ King says.
“I don’t know if that’s a movement or not,’’ Winfrey replies.
“He’s got a website…’’ King adds.
“You know what I would say to him,’’ suggests Winfrey, quickly changing the subject. “I would say, ‘Take your energy and put it in Barack Obama.’ That’s what I would say.’’
“Is that your favorite?’’ King asks.
“That would be my favorite guy,’’ Winfrey explains..
“Are you still an Illinoisan?’’ King asks a little later.
“Yes,’’ she says.
“So even though you have a home in California…’’
“Yes, I’m very much an Illinoisan.’’
“Sen. Obama is your senator,’’ King notes.
“He is my senator.’’
“And your choice.’’
“And my choice,’’ Winfrey says. “And I’m hoping he would run for president.’’
