Repositioning the blog: clearer boundaries

This blog is a broad as the Atlantic Ocean; I cover too many topics and can’t stick to one theme or category. But I have decided to go with it, at least to some degree. I can’t write about just public relations, or just arts management, or just immigration; I’d get bored. Besides, isn’t everything connected anyway?

I am repositioning the blog just a bit; adding more categories, but by doing so, setting more boundaries for topics. The new tag line might explain more: “a levensbeschouwing based on three themes: cultural affairs, international affairs, and public relations.”

Levensbeschouwing is the Dutch equivalent to the German weltanschauung; making it “life view” instead of “world view” but meaning the same.

Cultural affairs, international affairs and public relations are the three main themes. These themes are divided into 14 categories (including the non-categorical “Across the board” and “Web site Updates” and the geographical “All things Dutch” and “All things Chicago”) that narrow down some topics. For example, when I write about cultural affairs, I will mostly talk about classical music or arts management; when I write about international affairs, I will mostly talk about immigration or civil rights; and when I write about public relations, I will mostly talk about linguistics, journalism issues or new media.

The interconnectedness of the three themes leads to three main questions: how does public relations apply to cultural and international affairs; how does cultural affairs apply to public relations and international affairs; and how does international affairs apply to public relations and cultural affairs?

This means that when I write about, for example, civil rights, I want to see how public relations and culture affects the topic. And, of course, vice versa.

Naturally, I am going to have to remind myself of this approach as I write and keep this interconnectedness in mind. I just hope I’m making sense.
