A lot of Dutchness, music and a good cause

October 18, 2006

As I am getting tremendously excited about my fellow Dutchman—one with a slightly higher profile—Bernard Haitink conducting the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for the first time as principal conductor of the Orchestra tomorrow in Mahler’s incredible Symphony No. 3, there are three other, and smaller, events I would love to highlight.

On Friday, October 20, from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. (CT), the newly appointed CSO Composer-in-Residence Mark-Anthony Turnage will be on the Internet for a live chat with music fans (or any other person for that matter). Just yesterday I heard a sneak-preview of his new work From All Sides, which is to be premiered by the CSO and Hubbard Street Dance Chicago in January. The piece will be choreographed by Jorma Elo, an amazing Dutch artist, who was featured in the New York Times recently.

On Monday, October 23, the MusicNOW season kicks off with a program curated by Mark-Anthony Turnage and it features the CSO’s Dutch cellist Katinka Kleijn in the composer’s Kai for cello and ensemble.

Another option that night is Uncorked at Carnivale, an event by the Young Philanthropist Board of The Chicago Lighthouse. Alpana Singh, host of WTTW’s Check, Please! will host this event with wine, food and a silent auction. A great event for an even better cause!
